2009  marks 41 years  experience for Phoenix Ranch as a respected owner and quality breeder of Peruvian horses in the United States.  The love that develops for these outstanding recreational/show horses will be a life changing experience for you as well. 

Phoenix Ranch owners, Dr. Donald and Sonja Wirth, purchased their first Peruvian Horse, Matupana, in 1968.  Donald and Sonja both had prior experience with Quarter horses, American Saddlebreds and Polo Ponies.  But in 1968, when Sonja was recovering from a broken pelvis and injured bladder, she wanted a smooth riding trail horse.  Their search led them to the Peruvian Horse, and they fell in love.

To promote the breed, they first established Phoenix Ranch in their hometown on the east end of Long Island.  However, Dr. Donald Wirth, DMV, a 1958 graduate of Cornell University, never forgot his appreciation for the Finger Lakes Region of Upstate New York. 
This is where he spent many years as a Veterinary Medicine student in Ithaca, New York.  As breeders they also knew the importance for close proximity to a well-accredited large animal medical facility, and the aid of cutting-edge reproductive services.  These were the reasons for the 1984 relocation of Phoenix Ranch to a beautiful 56 acre farm in Romulus, New York.
